Happy Black History Month

As we step into February, a month dedicated to honoring the incredible achievements and contributions of Black individuals throughout history, we reflect on the profound impact that Black culture, history, and voices have had on shaping our world. Black History Month is a time for education, appreciation, and reflection- a time to highlight the struggles and triumphs of Black communities, as well as their ongoing journey toward equality and justice. The Soaring Eagles morning announcements will feature a Black History fact each and every day! Be sure to ask your child about what they learned everyday this month!

The 2026 Black History Month theme, "A Century of Black History Commemorations", honoring the 100th anniversary of the first Black History Week established by Carter G. Woodson in 1926. This theme explores the impacts of these celebrations on shaping identity, fostering pride, and advancing equality. It focuses on the evolution of 100 years of celebrating Black history and life.

The Black History Month Committee will be hosting a variety of educational and fun activities for the entire school to partake in! Starting on Monday, February 2nd, all grades and classes are invited to participate in the SCES Black History Month Poster Contest. Teachers may pick up a 22”x 28” poster board from the front office and have their entire class (or one designated group of students) decorate the poster for a chance at winning either a delicious pizza party or an awesome ice cream party for their entire class! As an additional incentive this year, the teacher of the overall winning class will receive a $50 gift card to Amazon or Target (winner’s choice).

The decorated poster must be hung in the cafeteria by noon on Tuesday, February 24th, in order to be considered for the contest. The BHM Committee will judge the posters based on several criteria: creativity, educational value, and overall presentation/ visual appeal. To ensure fairness, the posters will be judged in 3 grade level groups: K-1, 2-3, and 4-5. The winners will be announced by Dr. D on the afternoon announcements on Friday, February 27th! Please don’t forget to write the teacher’s name and grade level on the front right corner of the poster!

The Black History Month Committee is so excited to host its 4th Annual Soul Food Luncheon on the last day of the month, Friday, February 27th, for our entire Sope Creek administration, staff, and personnel! Like last year, the luncheon will be catered; however, we still need volunteers to send in desserts for the celebration. If you love to bake and you have a special family recipe you’d like to share, we need you to please sign up via the link below!

Lastly, the BHM Committee is so excited to host an amazing group of dancers and steppers from

East Cobb Middle School to perform for our 3rd-5th grade students this year. The performance is scheduled for Wednesday, February 25th, and will showcase the historical and cultural significance of movement, rhythm, and unity.
